Sam's father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Flitcroft. His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Catherine Rawsthorn or ROSTRON. He had three brothers and six sisters, named James, Joshua, Frank, Mary, Kate, Elizabeth, Isabel, Susannah and Jessie. He was the second youngest of the ten children.
