Joshua was born in June 1878 in Reddish.1  Joshua's father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Flitcroft.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Catherine Rawsthorn or ROSTRON. He had three brothers and six sisters, named James, Sam, Frank, Mary, Kate, Elizabeth, Isabel, Susannah and Jessie.  He was the fourth youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 1 in 1879 in Reddish.2
