James was born in June 1869 in Reddish.1  James' father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Flitcroft.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Catherine Rawsthorn or ROSTRON. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Joshua, Sam, Frank, Mary, Kate, Elizabeth, Isabel, Susannah and Jessie.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.
