James was born in 1802 in Little Lever and his baptism took place on March 20th, 1803 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  James' father was <unknown> and his mother was Jane Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Thornley. He had a sister named Mary.  He was the older of the two children.  He died at the age of 46 in 1848 in Bolton.2

‌James and Catherine were married in a religious ceremony on November 22nd, 1826 at St. Mary (Deane) by minister David Hewitt and witnessed by Abraham Boardman & Joshua Kirkman.4  They had two sons and five daughters, named Henry, James, Susannah, Jane, Peggy, Lavinia and Lavinia.
