Mary was born on August 9th, 1807 in Croft and her baptism took place on August 30th, 1807 at St. Oswald (Winwick).1 2  Mary's father was William Mather and her mother was Martha Welch.  Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Ann Monks. She had five brothers and six sisters, named William, William, Thomas, James, John, Jane, Ellen, Ann, Elizabeth, Margaret and Sarah.  She was the sixth youngest of the twelve children.
