Mary's father was Edward (Nedde) Mather and her mother was Mary Hough. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and <unknown>. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, Nathan, John, Alice, Margaret, John, Agnes, Betty and Nancy.

- Mary (or another Mary from Adlington) may have had an illigitimare daughter Betty Mather in 1812.
  
  26 Apr 1835, Mary Mather married John Balshaw at Standish (unconfirmed). John Riley (a possible son in law's brother) was a witness.
