John was born in 1781 in WestLeigh.1  John's father was Nathan Mather and his mother was Betty Green.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Green and Margaret Speakman. He had three brothers and a sister, named Abraham, Abraham, James and Peggy.  He was the oldest of the five children. He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Matthew, Abraham, Thomas, Sarah, Betty and Mary.  He died at the age of 54 in December 1835 in Little Bolton.  He was buried on December 27th, 1835 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).2

‌John and Betty were married in a religious ceremony on October 31st, 1813 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh) by Vicar Daniel Birkett and witnessed by Timothy & William Taylor.5   They had three sons and two daughters, named John, John, James, Jane and Ann.  There are no more children.
