John Mather

John was born in 1781 in WestLeigh.¹

John's father was Nathan Mather and his mother was Betty Green. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Green and Margaret Speakman. He had three brothers and a sister, named Abraham, Abraham, James and Peggy. He was the oldest of the five children. He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Matthew, Abraham, Thomas, Sarah, Betty and Mary. He died at the age of 54 in December 1835 in Little Bolton. His burial was on December 27th, 1835 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).²

Death Notes
- John probably died a few years befoer his wife remarried in 1839. Also, since his daughter Ann (from Sharples) was buried at St Mary's, Leigh in 1838 you would expect John to be buried there too. Although a little older than expected, the burial in 1835 is a very good match, and John was resifing in Little Bolton (close to Sharples, North of Bolton)

General Notes
- In 1813, John Mather married Elizabeth, daughter of Robert France and Jane France. They already had a daughter Jane, born the year before.
  
  John was a weaver when he married Elizabeth, but after that, an Engineer (Engine Man) at Atherton. His daughter was in Sharples when she died in 1838 and was buried at Leigh. It is assumed John was also buried there. If so, he died 1835, aged 54, born about 1781 and may have been married before he married Elizabeth.
