James was born in 1804 in Billinge and his baptism took place on April 15th, 1804 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  James' father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Higham.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Berrington. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, Thomas, Joshua, Ann, Catherine, Mary, Ellen and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 62 in 1866 in Billinge.2 



James' family with Martha Mills

‌James and Martha were married in a religious ceremony on May 4th, 1829 in Farnworth witnessed by William Mather.3  They had three sons and three daughters, named William, John, James, Mary, Ann and Margaret.  There are possibly more children.
