Joshua was born in 1819 in Billinge.1  Joshua's father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Higham.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Berrington. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, James, Thomas, Ann, Catherine, Mary, Ellen and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 76 in 1895.
