Catherine was born in 1806 in Billinge and her baptism took place on November 30th, 1806 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Catherine's father was James Mather and her mother was Mary Higham.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Berrington. She had four brothers and four sisters, named William, James, Thomas, Joshua, Ann, Mary, Ellen and Margaret.  She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.

‌Catherine and Thomas were married in a religious ceremony on June 7th, 1840 in Prescot.2   They had two sons and a daughter, named James, Thomas and Mary.
