Ellen was born in March 1814 in Billinge and her baptism took place on March 13th, 1814 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Ellen's father was James Mather and her mother was Mary Higham.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Berrington. She had four brothers and four sisters, named William, James, Thomas, Joshua, Ann, Catherine, Mary and Margaret.  She was the third youngest of the nine children.
