Herbert was born in December 1903 in Tonge-with-Haulgh and his baptism took place on December 9th, 1903 at St. Paul's (Astley Bridge).1 2  Herbert's father was George Mather and his mother was Ann Jane Bradshaw.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ann Nightingale; his maternal grandparents were William Bradshaw and Martha Coltart. He had a brother and two sisters, named Joseph, Ada and Martha.  He was the youngest of the four children.  He died at the age of 5 in March 1909 in Tonge-with-Haulgh.  He was buried on March 3rd, 1909 at St. Paul's (Astley Bridge).3 1
