Emma's father was James Mather and her mother was Maria Hulme. Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Susanna (Susan) Whalley. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Nathaniel, Joseph, Margaret, Martha, Mary and Polly. She had an adopted brother named Walter. She died at the age of 53 in July 1941 in Bolton.
