Alice was born in 1818 in Blackrod. Alice's father was Nathan Mather and her mother was Alice Makinson. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Entwistle. She had three brothers and six sisters, named John, Nathan, Richard, Ann, Mary, Elizabeth, Ellen, Agnes and Sarah. She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
