Thomas was born in 1824 in Bolton.1  Thomas' father was James Greenhalgh and his mother was Hannah Blakeley. He had three brothers and a sister, named William, John, Handel and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the five children. He had five half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Robert, James, Joseph, Wright, William, Mary, Rachel, Sarah and Ellen.
