William's father was James Greenhalgh and his mother was Alice Hardman. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Robert, James, Joseph, Wright, Mary, Rachel, Sarah and Ellen.  He was the youngest of the nine children. He had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thomas, William, John, Handel and Sarah.
