John was born in 1828 in Bolton and his baptism took place on August 24th, 1828 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  John's father was James Greenhalgh and his mother was Hannah Blakeley. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William, Handel and Sarah.  He was the second youngest of the five children. He had five half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Robert, James, Joseph, Wright, William, Mary, Rachel, Sarah and Ellen.
