Mary was born in 1834 in Bolton.1  Mary's father was James Greenhalgh and her mother was Alice Hardman. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Robert, James, Joseph, Wright, William, Rachel, Sarah and Ellen.  She was the oldest of the nine children. She had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thomas, William, John, Handel and Sarah.
