Joseph was born in 1840 in Bolton and his baptism took place on April 19th, 1840 at Bolton Emmanuel.1 2  Joseph's father was James Greenhalgh and his mother was Alice Hardman. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Robert, James, Wright, William, Mary, Rachel, Sarah and Ellen.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children. He had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thomas, William, John, Handel and Sarah.
