Rachel was born on January 28th, 1842 in Bolton and her baptism took place on June 15th, 1845 at St. Mary (Deane).1 2  Rachel's father was James Greenhalgh and her mother was Alice Hardman. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Robert, James, Joseph, Wright, William, Mary, Sarah and Ellen.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children. She had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thomas, William, John, Handel and Sarah.  She died at the age of 10 in February 1852 in Bolton.  She was buried on February 18th, 1852 in Bolton.3
