Robert's father was James Greenhalgh and his mother was Alice Hardman. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, Joseph, Wright, William, Mary, Rachel, Sarah and Ellen.  He was the second oldest of the nine children. He had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thomas, William, John, Handel and Sarah.  He died at the age of 11 in 1847 in Bolton.²
