Thomas was born in 1840 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on November 8th, 1840 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Thomas' father was George Barrow and his mother was Nancy Greenhalgh. He had four brothers and nine sisters, named John, Richard, James, George, Margaret, Betty, Eliza, Mary, Nancy, Nancy, Celine, Harriet and Ellen.  He was the twelfth oldest of the fourteen children. He had a half-brother named Edwin.
