Nancy was born in 1833 in Bolton and her christening took place there on January 12th, 1834.1 2  Nancy's father was George Barrow and her mother was Nancy Greenhalgh. She had five brothers and eight sisters, named John, Richard, James, George, Thomas, Margaret, Betty, Eliza, Mary, Nancy, Celine, Harriet and Ellen.  She was the eighth oldest of the fourteen children. She had a half-brother named Edwin.
