Richard was born in 1827 in Great Lever and his baptism took place on June 3rd, 1827 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Richard's father was George Barrow and his mother was Nancy Greenhalgh. He had four brothers and nine sisters, named John, James, George, Thomas, Margaret, Betty, Eliza, Mary, Nancy, Nancy, Celine, Harriet and Ellen.  He was the fourth oldest of the fourteen children. He had a half-brother named Edwin.
