George was born in 1838 in Wigan and his christening took place on November 4th, 1838 in Bolton.1 2  George's father was George Barrow and his mother was Nancy Greenhalgh. He had four brothers and nine sisters, named John, Richard, James, Thomas, Margaret, Betty, Eliza, Mary, Nancy, Nancy, Celine, Harriet and Ellen.  He was the eleventh oldest of the fourteen children. He had a half-brother named Edwin.
