Joseph was born on May 28th, 1775 in Guilford, NC. Joseph's father was Thomas Cook and his mother was Mary Mills. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Cook and Mary+ Underwood; his maternal grandparents were John+ Mills and Sarah+ Beals. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Isaac, Thomas, John, Jacob, William, Zimri, Nathan, Sarah and Elizabeth. He was the second oldest of the ten children.
