Margred was born about 1210 in Caernarvonshire, Wales.  Margred's father was Prince Llewelyn Fawr ("the Great") ap Iowerth of Wales and her mother was Princess Joan of England.  Her paternal grandfather was Iowerth ("Drwyndwn") ap Owain Gwynned and her paternal grandmother is Margaret ferch Madog; her maternal grandfather was King John ("Lackland") I of England and her maternal grandmother is Agatha de Ferrers. She had a brother and four sisters, named Llywelyn, "the Dark", "Ddu", Elen, Angharad and Marared Drwyndon. She had a half-brother named Gruffudd.  She died in Clifford Castle, , Herefordshire, England.  She was buried in Priory Church, Aconbury, Herefordshire, England.

‌Margred and John were married in a religious ceremony in 1219.  They had two sons named William and Richard.
