Rostistav I Mikhail was born about 1110 in Smolensk, Smolensk, Russia .  Rostistav I Mikhail's father was Grand Duke Harold Mstislav I of Kiev and his mother was Kristina Ingesdottir of Sweden.  His paternal grandfather was Grand Duke Vladimir Monomachus ("Monomakh") II of Kiev and his paternal grandmother is Princess Gytha of England; his maternal grandfather was King Inge ("the Elder") Stenkilsson I of Sweden and his maternal grandmother is Christina. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Izyaslav, Vsevolod Gavriil, Ingeborga and Mariya Agafiya.  He was the youngest of the five children. He had two half-sisters named Euphrosyne and Elena.
