Maria was born about 1208 in Constantinopole, Constantinopole, Turkey.  Maria's father was Emperor Philip II von Hohenstaufen and her mother was Princess Irene Angelica of Byzantium.  Her paternal grandparents were Emperor Frederich von Hohenstaufen III of the Holy Roman Empire and Beatrix de Bourgogne; her maternal grandfather was Emperor Isaac Angelus II and her maternal grandmother is Irene Kalusine Comnena. She had three sisters named Elisabeth, Beatrice Elizabeth and Kunigunde.  She was the youngest of the four children.  She died in 1235.
