James Shorter Grimes 
James Shorter was born on October 7th, 1855 in Elba, Coffee County, Alabama.1 James Shorter's father was John William Grimes and his mother was Julia Ann Garrett. His paternal grandparents were John Grimes and Catharine Frederick; his maternal grandparents were Robert* Jackson, Sr. Garrett and Mary* Ann Clackler. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Robert Mason, Joshua English, John Franklin, William Bartley, Mary Catherine, Louisa A., Sarah Elizabeth, Julia Evaline and Martha Fanny. He was the fifth youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 47 on May 20th, 1903 in Elba, Coffee County, Alabama. He was buried in Curtis Cemetery, Elba, Coffee County, Alabama.1 1 -
