His paternal grandparents were John Grimes and Catharine Frederick; his maternal grandparents were Robert* Jackson, Sr. Garrett and Mary* Ann Clackler. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Robert Mason, James Shorter, John Franklin, William Bartley, Mary Catherine, Louisa A., Sarah Elizabeth, Julia Evaline and Martha Fanny.
