Her paternal grandparents were John William Grimes and Julia Ann Garrett. She had two brothers and five sisters, named John William, Joshua Dewey, Lizzie Belle, Mary Magdalene, Nolie Lee, Lucy Frances and Estelle Julia. She was the third oldest of the eight children.
