Eleanor was born in of Burgos, Castile, Spain.1 Eleanor's father was Ferdinand III King of Castile & León and her mother was Johanna de Dammartin. Her paternal grandparents were Alphonso IX the Slobberer de León King of León and Berengaria Alfonsez Queen of Castile; her maternal grandparents were Simon de Dammartin II de Aumâle Ct of Montreul and Marie (Jeanne) de Ponthieu Cts of Ponthieu. She had a half-sister named Margaret. She died in Herdeby (near Grantham), Lincolnshire, England/Grantham, England.1 General Notes

Upon the death of Eleanor, Edward I was deeply heartbroken at
her loss. Crosses were erected along the route which her
entourage follwed while taking her body to be buried in London.
Some of these crosses still stand today.
