Leslie was born on November 30th, 1909 in 8 Westgate, Eccleshill, Bradford, W. Yorks.1   Leslie's father was William Thomas Motley and his mother was Sarah Elizabeth Ickeringill.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Motley and Maria Elizabeth Smith; his maternal grandparents were John Ickeringill and Martha Smith. He had five brothers and four sisters, named John George, William, George, Herbert, Arthur, Wilhelmina (Mayna), Lilian, Martha and Edith Eleanor.  He was the nineth oldest of the ten children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Charles, John and Emily.  He died  due to Officially recorded by his Japanese captors as malaria, but the POWs usually suffered from several diseases when they died, particularly Beri-Beri and dysentry. Also brutality to prisoners was often concealed to prevent future ramifications. at the age of 35 on June 5th, 1945 in Japanese POW camp, Sandakan, North Borneo.2
