Herbert was born on July 29th, 1904 in 14 Henry Street, Shipley, W. Yorkshire.  Herbert's father was William Thomas Motley and his mother was Sarah Elizabeth Ickeringill.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Motley and Maria Elizabeth Smith; his maternal grandparents were John Ickeringill and Martha Smith. He had five brothers and four sisters, named John George, William, George, Leslie, Arthur, Wilhelmina (Mayna), Lilian, Martha and Edith Eleanor.  He was the sixth oldest of the ten children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Charles, John and Emily.  He died at the age of 48 on July 21st, 1953.
