Martha Smith

Martha was born on March 21st, 1844 in Town End, Wortley, Leeds, W. Yorkshire. Martha's father was Joseph Smith and her mother was Sarah Cocker. She had four brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Jim (James?), John, William and Elizabeth. She was the fifth oldest of the six children. She died at the age of 65 in 1910 in Bradford, W. Yorkshire.¹

General Notes
- (Medical):There seems to be 2 Martha Smiths born in Wortley in about 1844. One seems to have had the parents John Smith and Ann Jagger, and the other Joseph Smith and Sarah. It is not exactly clear which ones are the correct parents for Martha. However, I have found out much more info about Martha of Joseph and Sarah so have assumed these were the parents but this is pure conjecture. However, some of the names of Martha and John's children do correspond with Martha's (Joseph and Sarah's daughter) parents and siblings, as might be expected (although this is also true for John and Ann). Also this Martha's job in wool weaving (apparently the only one in her family to have such a job) could easily have brought her into contact with her future husband John who was also a wool weaver
