William was born in 1706 in Great Sampford, Essex and his christening took place on August 11th, 1706 in St Michael, Great Sampford, Essex.1 2   William's father was William Hockley and his mother was Mary Bentley.  His paternal grandparents were William Hockley and Anne Chapman. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Richard, John, John, James, Daniel, Johanna, Mary, Susanna, Ann, Sarah and Grace.  He was the oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 57 on March 12th, 1763.2
