William was born on May 12th, 1658 in Thaxted, Essex and his christening took place on June 16th, 1658 in Thaxted Parish Church, Essex.1 2  William's father was John Hockley and his mother was Isabell Dallyson.  His paternal grandparents were William Hockley and Mary Badcock. He had four brothers and five sisters, named John, William, Edward, Daniel, Isabell, Mary, Rebecca, Sarah and Hannah.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
