John was born in 1649 in Thaxted, Essex and his christening took place on April 8th, 1649 in Thaxted Parish Church, Essex.1 2  John's father was John Hockley and his mother was Isabell Dallyson.  His paternal grandparents were William Hockley and Mary Badcock. He had four brothers and five sisters, named William, Edward, William, Daniel, Isabell, Mary, Rebecca, Sarah and Hannah.  He was the oldest of the ten children.
