James was born in 1716 in Great Sampford, Essex and his christening took place there on September 9th, 1716.1 2   James' father was William Hockley and his mother was Mary Bentley.  His paternal grandparents were William Hockley and Anne Chapman. He had five brothers and six sisters, named William, Richard, John, John, Daniel, Johanna, Mary, Susanna, Ann, Sarah and Grace.  He was the fifth youngest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 64 in 1780 in Thaxted, Essex.  He was buried on June 15th, 1780 in Thaxted Parish Church, Essex.3 4
