John was born in 1709 in Great Sampford, Essex and his christening took place on July 5th, 1709 in St Michael, Great Sampford, Essex.1 2   John's father was William Hockley and his mother was Mary Bentley.  His paternal grandparents were William Hockley and Anne Chapman. He had five brothers and six sisters, named William, Richard, John, James, Daniel, Johanna, Mary, Susanna, Ann, Sarah and Grace.  He was the third oldest of the twelve children.  He died in 1709 in Great Sampford, Essex.  He was buried on July 10th, 1709 in St Michael, Great Sampford, Essex.2 1
