Mary was born in 1712 in Great Sampford, Essex and her christening took place on February 22nd, 1712 in St Michael, Great Sampford, Essex.1 2   Mary's father was William Hockley and her mother was Mary Bentley.  Her paternal grandparents were William Hockley and Anne Chapman. She had six brothers and five sisters, named William, Richard, John, John, James, Daniel, Johanna, Susanna, Ann, Sarah and Grace.  She was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.
