Thomas was born on January 29th, 1806 in Idmiston, Wiltshire and his christening took place on March 2nd, 1806 in Laverstock, Wiltshire.1   Thomas' father was Thomas Cannings and his mother was Sarah Brown.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Cannings and Ann Austence; his maternal grandparents were John Brown and Sarah Tubb. He had five brothers and four sisters, named William, William, Solomon, James, Daniel, Mary, Harriet, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 62 in June 1868 in Salisbury, Wiltshire.1
