James was born in 1831 in Kelso Scotland. James' father was James Purves (Scotland Blacksmith) and his mother was Jane Morrison?. He had five brothers and a sister, named Robert, Thomas, John, Alexander, George and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.

James and Ellen were married in a religious ceremony in September 1850 in Newcastle upon Tyne.1   They had four sons and six daughters, named Robert, James, John, Joseph, Margaret, Jane, Jessie, Ellen, Bessie and Annie.
