Alexander was born about March 1839 in Northumberland.1  Alexander's father was James Purves (Scotland Blacksmith) and his mother was Jane Morrison?. He had five brothers and a sister, named James, Robert, Thomas, John, George and Elizabeth.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
