Thomas was born about 1836 in Scotland.  Thomas' father was James Purves (Scotland Blacksmith) and his mother was Jane Morrison?. He had five brothers and a sister, named James, Robert, John, Alexander, George and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
