George was born about June 1841 in Northumberland.1  George's father was James Purves (Scotland Blacksmith) and his mother was Jane Morrison?. He had five brothers and a sister, named James, Robert, Thomas, John, Alexander and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
