Robert was born about 1834 in Scotland.  Robert's father was James Purves (Scotland Blacksmith) and his mother was Jane Morrison?. He had five brothers and a sister, named James, Thomas, John, Alexander, George and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
