Bessie was born about 1872 in Chalk Farm Pancras.  Bessie's father was James Purves (Scotland Farrier) and her mother was Eleanor (Ellen) Hume (b Wooler/Berwick).  Her paternal grandparents were James Purves (Scotland Blacksmith) and Jane Morrison?; her maternal grandparents were William Hume (Ag Labourer) and Elizabeth. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Robert, James, John, Joseph, Margaret, Jane, Jessie, Ellen and Annie.  She was the second youngest of the ten children.
