Eleanor, known as Ellen, was born in December 1839 in Berwick on Tweed. Ellen's father was William Hume (Ag Labourer) and her mother was Elizabeth. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Thomas, Robert, Elizabeth, Ann and Mary.

Ellen and James were married in a religious ceremony in September 1850 in Newcastle upon Tyne.1   They had four sons and six daughters, named Robert, James, John, Joseph, Margaret, Jane, Jessie, Ellen, Bessie and Annie.
